Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, 1885 - 1966, fleet admiral of the United States Navy. He played a major role in both World War I and in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief, US Pacific Fleet and Commander of the Pacific Ocean Areas for US and Allied air. Nimitz was an authority on submarines, playing a key role in the creation of the world's first nuclear powered submarine, USS Nautilus. Based in Pearl Harbor, he rapidly put men, ships and materials together and defeated the Japanese navy in the famous Battle of Midway. He was the last surviving officer in the rank of Fleet Admiral.
