Admiral Richard E. Byrd, 1888-1957, American naval officer who specialized in feats of exploration. He pioneered American aviation and polar exploration. Byrd has been honored for his expeditions as first to reach the North Pole, and first to reach the South Pole by air, and received the Medal of Honor for his heroic explorations. Here is a signed formal letter on his "Byrd Antarctic Expedition II letterhead, dated May 26, 1933, to Hon. Hirem Bingam, president of the National Aeronautical Association, in which Byrd discusses his upcoming expedition!
