Herman Melville 1819 - 1891, novelist and poet of the Renaissance period. His writings come from his real experiences at sea as a sailer and his observations of contradictions in society. He was a master at words, irony, allusions, philosophy, literature and imagery. In 1951 he published his astounding, eloquent and intense book, Moby Dick. Initially it was not well received but in time it would become his signature piece, a masterpiece.
