John Glenn, 1921 - 2016, aviator, engineer, astronaut and United States Senator from Ohio. He was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. Before joining NASA, he was a fighter pilot in both World War II and Korea, earning 5 distinguished Flying Crosses and 18 clusters. On February 20, 1962, he flew the Friendship 7 mission, for which he received the Congressional Space Metal of Honor in 1978. John Glenn was inducted into the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.
