Joshua Chamberlain, "The Hero of Gettysburg", 1828-1914. Highly honored Civil War Union Commander during the American Civil War, who would lead the troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox and then become the 32nd Governor of Maine. For his gallantry at Gettysburg, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and reached the rank of brigadier general, and brevet major general. He is the focus of many books including "Killer Angel" biography, one of the most coveted Civil War studies and The Passing of the Armies: an account of the Final Campaign of the Army of the Potomac. Chamberlain would later become the president of the exclusive "Society of the Army of the Potomac". Joshua Chamberlain was president of this company, a venture to build and expand railroads in the recovering post civil war era and did indeed build a railway to the coast, eventually merging with The Atlantic Coastline System.
