Martin Van Buren 8th President of the United States and the 10th Secretary of State, the very first president born an American citizen. He was the founder of the Democratic Party and was also the 8th Vice President, under Andrew Jackson. During his half century of public service, he built and defended a new system of political parties at both state and federal levels. Here is a hand written and signed 2-page letter, Philadelphia, March 29, 1858. The image in the display is the 1858 portrait by G.P. A. Healy that hangs in the White House, nicely the year of this letter.
