Millard Fillmore, 1800-1874, 13th President of the United States (1850-1853) was the last member of the Whig Party to hold the office of president. He assumed the presidency upon the death of Zachary Taylor. As an academic and intellectual, he co-founded the University of Buffalo, the Buffalo Historical Society and Buffalo General Hospital. He endorsed and signed the Compromise Measure of 1850 as an alternative to war, and opened trade with Japan.  Here is a Free Frank dated 1850, the first year of his presidency and the first year he would have been accorded the privilege of free franking
