General Robert E. Lee 1807 - 1870, commanding officer of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. One of the most famous generals in history, Lee ultimately surrendered at Appomatox on April 9, 1865 and had been pardoned by President Lincoln, a pardon he lost, keeping him from acquiring full citizenship in America, and was only found 100 years later. His home in Arlington, VA, was in the middle of a national cemetery, with the graves of a thousand union soldiers, so he moved his family to Lexington where he gathered other confederate soldiers and friends to welcome them "home" (many to amnesty). Here is an original autograph by General Robert E. Lee.
