President Ulysses S. Grant (1822 - 1885)
18th President of the United States. During the Civil War, Grant was commanding general of the Union Army and led them on to victory over the Confederacy. He went on to implement congressional “Reconstruction”, protect African-American citizenship, and support industrial expansion. Grant became President and Commander in Chief, serving in office from March 4, 1869 - March 4, 1877. The rank of the Four Star General was created during the Civil War and Ulysses S. Grant, one of only 3 generals to receive it! Here is the signature portion of a receipt for payment, where the final words say, “of the receipt of their….” and hand signed by Ulysses S. Grant.
